Handheld vs Scale Body Fat Percentage Monitoring

All people should make their health a priority because after all if we don’t have health, nothing else truly matters. The first step towards a healthier lifestyle is to evaluate your health to know exactly what you have to do to improve it. Among the most important things you need to consider is your weight as it tells you many things about your overall health. If you are overweight or underweight, it simply means that your health is at risk and you have to take some action. Too much or too little fat can have a significant impact on your health, so you need to make sure you measure and track it to maintain an ideal body fat percentage. There are several ways to measure the body fat, including skin calipers, DEXA scans, underwater weighing, and so on. In this article, we will refer only to body fat analyzers, which usually use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Currently, there are two types available: handheld or scales. Both of them work pretty much the same, so choosing one of them can be rather tricky for some people. So let’s find out more about them.

How Body Fat Analyzers Work

Usually, these devices use the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), a technology that estimates the body composition. By sending a harmless electric current throughout the body, this technique will determine the electric impedance or electric resistance of body tissue, thus offering an estimation of the total body water (TBW). Based on the TBW, the body fat analyzer can determine the fat-free mass and the body fat of the user. This method is very popular as it renders quick results and it’s non-invasive for the users. Both the handheld and the scale version use the BIA technique, providing accurate readings without too much effort.

Main Differences Between the Two Types in Terms of:

    • Usage

With a handheld body fat analyzer, you just need to take the handles with both hands and hold them until the reading are provided. The floor version is similar to a scale and you have to simply stand on it until the measurements are ready. There are some models that have hands and feet connected, which makes them a combination of the two types. In order to use them, you need to stand on the scale and use the handles at the same time.

    • Signal

The devices that are handheld transmit the electric current through one hand, then down the waist and legs, and finally, it returns to the other hand. The scale version sends the electric current from one leg to the waist and then back to the other leg. In both cases, you have to wait for several seconds in order to see the results.

    • Display

Both types feature a display where you can see the readings. The display usually differs from one model to another, but its main purpose is to show you the readings. Some body fat analyzers come with a backlight display that allows you to see the measurements even in the dark.

    • Accuracy

There aren’t too many differences in what concerns the accuracy, both types providing realistic estimations if they are properly used. The margin of error is approximately 4-5%, so choosing between the two options it’s a matter of personal choice.

    • Popularity

The bathroom scales tend to be more popular as they come in various styles and designs. Their popularity is also proven by the fact that there are much more scales available than handheld body fat analyzers.

    • Price

The handheld versions tend to be more expensive, but you can also buy expensive bathroom scales that come with more advanced features. In general, the devices that have WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity cost more than those which can’t be connected to your smartphone or computer.

There aren’t too many differences between the handheld body fat analyzers and the bathroom scales, except the fact that they use the same technology, that is the bioelectrical impedance analysis, and that they have a different design. While the handheld version transmits the signal through the body from one hand to the other, the floor version sends the electric signal from one foot to the other. The most important thing is to realize the importance of such a device as it can help you monitor your body fat percentage and live a healthier life. So, it’s not really important that you choose, as long as you do what you have to do for eliminating the risks associated with a high or low body fat percentage.
