Stay Cool this Summer with these Tips

Summer’s arrived which means warmer weather is here to stay for awhile. If you’re not a fan of the heat and humidity, you may not enjoy the summer swelter like others. Don’t let warm weather put you in a foul mood. Instead, keep your cool this summer with these tips to help keep your home comfortable.

Freshen Your Bedding

Nothing beats the feeling of cool sheets when you slip into bed after a long day. Stay comfortable on those hot summer nights and swap out heavy sheets and blankets with a light cotton alternative, which breathes easier and can keep much cooler than heavier linens. If you usually sleep with memory foam pillows, swap those out for down pillows, which are much lighter and won’t retain your body’s heat a much.

Prepare Your Windows

It’s tempting to want to let the natural sunlight into your home during the summer months, but leaving your blinds open too much can warm up your home pretty quickly. Instead, keep your blinds closed when you’re not home so you can come home to a cool house after a long day at work. Drawing the shades can significantly lower your indoor temperature while also saving you money on your energy bills. If you’re serious about keeping the sun’s rays out of your home, you could also invest in blackout curtains, which completely block out the sun’s rays.

Prep Your AC

After sitting dormant for months, your air conditioner may need a quick tune-up before you can count on it to keep you cool during those hot summer months. Have an HVAC professional come take a look at your unit to ensure it’s in good working condition. They should also clean it and swap out your filter so that it can run efficiently on those sizzling summer days. Keeping up with AC maintenance not only keeps it running efficiently, but it can also help you can minor repairs before they become costly fixes and prolong its life.

Get Grilling

Using your oven during the summer months can really crank up your home’s temperature. Instead of using your oven or stovetop for meal prep, make use of your grill. It’s a great opportunity to show off those grilling skills while keeping the heat outdoors. Not only is it a great way to make use of your outdoor space, but nothing tastes quite like a meal that’s been char-grilled outdoors.

Close the Door

Do you remember your mother telling you to stop running in and out of the house when you were a kid? Now that you’re an adult and have to pay your own energy bills, her words of wisdom make sense. Constantly opening and closing your doors allows warm air to get into your home, which will quickly raise the temperature. Don’t open your doors hoping to get a breeze and only go outdoors when you really need to.

Create a Breeze

In addition to keeping your doors sealed off from hot outdoor temps, you should also use your windows strategically to keep your home cool. Prop them open at night when the temps are cooler to let in a nice breeze and close them in the morning before it warms up.

Summer doesn’t have to be a miserable season for those who prefer cooler months. If you know how to keep your home cool, you can stay comfortable while even saving a little money on your monthly energy bills in the process.
